HSBC Sevens World Series Achieved Record Global Broadcast

The HSBC Sevens World Series achieved more record broadcast figures in the 2012/13 season

The IRB has announced more strong broadcast figures for the Olympic sport of Rugby Sevens and the HSBC Sevens World Series 2012/13.

The broadcast report published by the IRB’s television distribution partner Pro-Active Television on the recently concluded 2012/13 HSBC Sevens World Series confirms another record global audience, with a 5% overall increase on the strong figures of 2011/12.

The grand prix-style, nine-round World Series accumulated a record 4,504 hours of total airtime across 149 territories.

In all, 38 broadcasters aired coverage to an estimated 390 million homes either via live, delayed live, repeats or the official 30-minute ‘IRB Sevens World’ show.

In addition, in-flight coverage was increased and news bulletins carrying World Series footage reached over 240 million homes in 130 countries.

Key markets were added to the growing list of takers, such as Spain, Ireland and Russia, while existing takers such as NBC (USA), OSN (Pan Middle East) and Supersport (Pan Africa) grew their coverage.

Only eight years ago, the total airtime for the World Series stood at just 300 hours, underlining the considerable advance Rugby Sevens has made in the eyes of international broadcasters and the global sporting public.

‘IRB Sevens World’ was shown by 17 broadcasters, while online video highlights packages attracted 2.5 million views on the official website irbsevens.com and Youtube.com/irb.

Over the same season online consumption of official Series news and information also broke previous records, irbsevens.com attracting over 9.1 million page views from a user base spanning 214 countries, with 36% of traffic consumed on mobile devices. Integrated social media platforms, combining Youtube, Facebook and Twitter, also grew in users, adding to the interaction between the sport and its many fans around the world.

IRB Chairman, Bernard Lapasset said: “The HSBC Sevens World Series has now firmly established itself in the sporting calendar among international broadcasters and also fans around the world, who generated a record 562,486 overall attendance across the nine rounds.

“As an Olympic sport Sevens is now well on the road to Rio, attracting new athletes to Rugby all the time from a variety of different backgrounds, and also new fans with its winning blend of skill, speed, competitive action and festival atmosphere.”

Giles Morgan, Group Head of Sponsorship & Events at HSBC added: “It is great to see the growth of the HSBC Sevens World Series – the sport itself is growing rapidly as 2016 draws nearer but to see that audiences are also following that trend is fantastic. It is particularly pleasing to see new markets watching the sport too and we are looking forward to hopefully another record breaking season with even bigger audiences tuning in for 2013/14.”

The 2012/13 HSBC Sevens World Series comprised nine tournaments in Australia (Gold Coast), Dubai, South Africa (Port Elizabeth), New Zealand (Wellington), USA (Las Vegas), Hong Kong, Japan (Tokyo), Scotland (Glasgow), England (London).

Varsity Cup Continues Growth, Adds Clemson to the Ranks

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:

Provo, UT— The Varsity Cup announced today that Clemson University will join the Varsity Cup National Collegiate Rugby Championship beginning in the 2014 spring season.

Clemson completed the 2013 season finishing second in the Atlantic Coast Rugby League with a 10-2 record, behind 2013 Varsity Cup semifinalist the Naval Academy. The Tigers went deep into their respective post season reaching the national quarterfinals.

Clemson head coach Justin Hickey felt the Tigers’ inclusion in the Varsity Cup was sign of his program’s progress.

“Clemson is incredibly excited to join the Varsity Cup,” Hickey said, “The Varsity Cup has quickly become a premier competition, and it is an honor to receive the invitation and to be associated with programs of such rich history and tradition. With the vision of the Varsity Cup, its teams, and the direction of our program, the timing is right and we look forward to an excellent future for the competition.”

The Clemson Tigers are set to join the Varsity Cup having agreed to a participation commitment for the 2014 and 2015 post seasons. The decision to support Clemson’s entry into the Varsity Cup came with the unanimous backing of the Varsity Cup universities.

BYU rugby coach David Smyth commented, “Clemson is one of the top emerging rugby programs in the country and was a natural fit for the Varsity Cup’s expansion.”

“The Varsity Cup has identified Clemson as a top, consistently high performing rugby team from an NCAA university in the southeastern US,” Smyth continued, “The decision to extend an invitation to Clemson was arrived at through our due diligence in examining their team, and our belief that their program structure and coaching, along with their university support to be top notch. The Clemson Tigers will be a great addition to the Varsity Cup for the coming seasons.”

The addition of the Clemson Tigers brings the total number of Varsity Cup teams for the 2014 competition to 10 including 2013’s eight original teams and the recent addition of the University of Texas.

More news and information on the Varsity Cup and the participating teams can be found on Facebook and Twitter.
